BIG CHANGES

Half the Sky is a non-profit organization organized to enrich the lives and enhance the prospects for orphaned children in China. The organization establishes and operates infant nurture and preschool programs, provides personalized learning for older children and offers permanent family care, medical care and guidance for children with disabilities. In April 2011, Half the Sky and volunteers renovated an orphanage operating within a Social Welfare Institution in Changsha, Hunan, China.

Tribute of Light, World Trade Center, New York City

TheTribute of Light memorial for the World Trade Center, New York City. Six months after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, evidence still remains of the destruction of the Twin Towers. To commemorate the six-month anniversary of the World Trade Center terrorist attack, the Tribute of Light was erected adjacent to Ground Zero. Two shafts of light similar in shape and position to the two World Trade Center towers are beamed into the night sky. The Tribute of Light is pictured from the New Jersey-side of the Hudson River.

The Station Nightclub fire was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, killing 100 people. The fire began at 11:07 PM EST, on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at The Station, a nightclub located at 211 Cowesett Avenue in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the evening's headlining band, Jack Russell's Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. A fast-moving fire engulfed the club. In addition to the 100 fatalities, some 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured. In 2007, Memorials to the victims stand on the empty lot where The Station once stood.
